2006 AEA Scholarship Recipients

Ho-hin Choy
$3,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Ho-hin Choy, I am 18, and I am currently a senior at Skyline High School in Oakland. I immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong when I was only four years old and ever since then I have lived and breathed Oakland. Throughout high school I have committed myself to community service, volunteering at various organizations such as the American Red Cross, Asian Perinatal Advocates, the Chabot Space and Science Center, and the San Francisco General Hospital. I have dreams of one day becoming a doctor and so I plan on pursuing a biological sciences degree in college. Right now I am deciding between Brown University and UCLA."

Conty Son
$2,500 Scholarship Recipient

"My community is filled with police sirens, gunshots, and people standing out on the corner hustling. This negativity motivates me to work hard and move out of my community so I can do better for myself. My second motivation comes from my parents. They never had the chance to attend college because they were new to the country (we were refugees) and I do not want them to see their child go through what they have been through. I focus all of my energy in school and setting myself up to become a college-bound student. I am impelled to break the stereotype that people in a violent community are those whom are not capable of success. Fortunately, I am proud to say that I have broken the stereotype because I see myself on the road to success. I have learned that it is hard for a first-generation minority to stay on track. I am here to prove to society, minorities, and to me that it doesn't matter what shape, size, color you are, you are capable for having and deserving the same opportunity as everyone else."

Howard Lo
$2,500 Scholarship Recipient

"Hi my name is Howard Lo, and I am currently attending Skyline High School. This fall, I will be attending UC Berkeley, majoring in Biological Science hoping to become a doctor one day. During my spare time when I'm not studying, I devote my time to my community. I enjoy playing basketball, ceramics, and swimming."

Eric Hong

"My name is Eric Hong and I attend Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. I have been very involved in high school activities and played on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. I am also an officer in the school's DECA business club. I am very active in the community. I am a board member of the City of Pleasanton Youth Planning Committee which meets regularly to discuss various youth programs and activities. In my spare time, I enjoy snowboarding and playing the guitar. I will be pursuing my college education at U.C. Irvine."

Tammy Nguyen
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Tammy (Truc) Thanh Nguyen. I am a seventeen year old Asian-American. I am currently a senior at Life Academy of Health and Biosciences High School in Oakland. My ethnicity is Vietnamese. I can speak both Vietnamese and English. I was born in Texas and raised in Oakland, California. I am the youngest of the family. I was an honor student from year 2001-2004. I was also in the Vietnamese Academic Award from the year 1996-2003. I am an Upward Bound student from Mills College since summer of 2001. In my freshman year, I joined in a program called AYPAL; Asian & Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership Program. I was also in the Honor Society at school, tutoring students who needed help in their math and English homework. During my sophomore year, I joined a program called FACES For the Future: Health Professions Internship Partnership (HPIP)."

Cindy Nham
$2,000  Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Cindy Nham. I am 18 years old and currently attending Life Academy of Health and Biosciences High School. I will be the first in my family to graduate from high school and go to college. This fall, I am going to be attending University of California, Berkeley. I am really passionate about the sciences and plan to continue that as my major. Some of my hobbies include baseball, reading, music and traveling. I am also enrolled in a program called Summer Search which sponsors me to go on life changing summers to Colorado where I backpacked, kayaked and did community service. I also got the chance to go to Panama where I lived with a host family, learned Spanish, and did service at the local elementary school."

Julie Chao
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Julie Chao and I'm a senior at Skyline High School. I am currently the captain of my badminton team in which I have been dedicated to for four years and I am also the president of a club that I revived on my campus called Asian Student Union (ASU). I'm a very persistent and hardworking person, never giving up and always trying my best. Next year I will be attending University of California, Davis. As of right now, I'm not certain of what I want to major in but I'm hoping to discover that in college. My plan for now is just to graduate from UC Davis with a bachelor's degree and then move on to graduate school and obtain a master's degree. After college, I hope to be in a profession where I'll enjoy the work that I do and hopefully be able to give back to the community at the same time."

Judy Saechao
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Judy Saechao. I am currently a senior at Skyline High School. Growing up in a community where minorities struggle with social and economic challenges and have parents who are immigrants, education definitely has always been my first priority. Excitingly, I will be the first generation in my family to attend college. A strong passion I've always had is to take part in my role of society by becoming a woman's activist and speaking up for what I firmly believe in. I have come to learn that 'life is not about how much money we make or the number of titles we hold, but what values we give our families and how many lives we can positively impact' -Rick Jennings."

Garrett Chow
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"As I complete my four years of high school, several activities come to mind that have contributed and shaped my life - tae kwon do, running cross-country and track and field, performing many hours of community service and lastly, my love for music and playing the alto saxophone. I have participated in martial arts for the last twelve years and living the five tenants of tae kwon do - perseverance, courtesy, integrity, self-control and indomitable spirit is the most natural way to live my life. Running cross-country as well as track and field during my four years of high school has brought an inner pride whether I won or lost a race. Performing many hours of community service for both Chabot Space and Science Center in my freshman and sophomore years and the Maria Ann Hsiao Memorial Foundation in my junior and senior years (in addition to other non-profit service organizations), has taught me the importance of "giving back" to the community and it has helped me to appreciate all that I have in my life. Lastly, I love music and enjoy playing the alto saxophone. I have played in the orchestra for the school's Spring Musicals - Guys and Dolls in my junior year and Home Sweet Home in my senior year (this musical is an original script, the music and lyrics were written by two Seniors at my school this year). Being a part of the orchestra is fantastic. I am definitely looking forward to a new chapter in my life - college will be a great experience that I am going to enjoy not only for the academics and the challenges of learning but also for the opportunity of making new friends, becoming more independent and achieving my dreams and goals. By receiving a scholarship award from the Asian Employees Association at the Port of Oakland, it is a great beginning."

Cindy Saetern
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Cindy Saetern and I am a senior at Media Academy High School in Oakland. As Student Body Vice President, I have become a leader amongst my peers. My years of dedicated community service include working on the rights of immigrants with Asian Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership, teaching workshops to youth in the community and organizing community events. Working last summer as an intern for KTVU Channel 2, I have become highly motivated to pursue a career in television and public relations. I am an editor of my school's newspaper and intend to study Communications at the University of California, Berkeley."

Rolando Ramirez
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Rolando Ramirez. I am a senior at Oakland Technical High School and will most likely be attending University of California, Berkeley during the fall of 2006. I was born in El Salvador and came to the United States when I was 12 years old. Learning English and adapting to a new environment was tough, but with hard-work and determination, I have been able to establish myself in the United States. My dream as a little kid was to become a soccer superstar, but since that is not very realistic, I am pursuing higher education. I truly love sports, especially soccer, but I have come to realize that an education is extremely valuable. I am currently part of the Engineering Academy at Oakland Tech, and though I am not certain of what I want to major in, I think I will explore the field more in depth in college. I hope to become a role model not only to my sister and cousins, but also to the Latino community. I truly thank the Port of Oakland Asian Employees Association for this scholarship because this is a great contribution to my struggle in funding my education."

Winnie Chan
$2,000 Scholarship Recipient

"As a seventeen year-old Chinese-American young lady, I have grown to love community service, taking risks, and accomplishing my goals. Since I was a child, I was often responsible, as I cared for my brothers. Through this, I learned the importance of helping others. I have also been working since age fifteen to help support my family financially. Also, I love jogging, hiking, rowing, because the mind and body are both challenged to their limits, to which I have endured and completed. I like traveling and having new experiences, which is offered to me in college, along with my advanced education. Occasionally, I enjoy being expressive through poetry and drawings. Nevertheless, I love life."
