2005 AEA Scholarship Recipients

Bao Chau Nguyen
$4,500 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Bao Chau Nguyen. I am currently attending Oakland Technical High School. I have always been interested in the field of architecture, which is why I joined the Engineering Academy. Furthermore, I am a part of the most rigorous social studies program at my school, the Paideia Program. This is where I was introduced to political science and, since then, I have taken a liking to the subject. Therefore, I'm planning to pursue either field, or perhaps both, at the University of California Berkeley. If I do go into architecture, my future goal is to work in developing countries. If I go into the political arenas, then I would like to learn more about the relationship between nations and how it affects their people. I'm planning on spending the next four year figuring how to combine both of my interests. As for a more short term goal, I am going to be in France this summer with a study abroad program, where I will have the chance to practice the language."

Charlotta Chan
$2,500 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Charlotta Chan and I'm a senior at Skyline High School. I will be attending UCLA next fall, majoring in International Development Studies with an emphasis on Political Science. I chose this field because I love experiencing different cultures and learning new languages. I intend to study abroad during my college years, though I have not chosen which country yet. I enjoy sports, and have played badminton on my school's team for four years, placing fourth in singles in Oakland. I hope to continue this sport in college as well. As for hobbies, I love trying new things, such as picking up a new language (right now it's Finnish), sewing, or skateboarding."

Lucia Kuang
$2,500 Scholarship Recipient

"I am currently a senior at Skyline High School. This fall, I will be attending UC Berkeley. I am planning to study abroad for a year during college because I like to travel and experience different cultures and lifestyles. Currently, I do not know what I wish to major in because there are so many opportunities that I do not know of. I will let college open that door of opportunities for me. I like working with people and volunteering because I like to give back to my community. One of my main goals is to learn to speak and write a foreign language fluently."

Lena Thu Tran
$2,500 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Lena Tran and I will be attending Cal Berkeley in the fall of 2005. I am very excited about this new experience in my life. I am currently registered as undecided because I am still in the “figuring out my place in the world” phase. I want to explore all my options and discover my true potential then use it in a fun and rewarding career. I guess I’m an idealist and an optimist, because I know that when you have faith, something magical always happens. Although it may seem like my head is up in the skies, I am actually pretty down to earth and I love to take on challenges and go on adventures. My favorite things to do include hiking and camping, reading, solving tough math problems, volunteering, and exploring new things."

Katherine Academia
$1,000 Scholarship Recipient

Katherine Academia is a senior at Pinole Valley High School. She is proud to say that over the past four years she has learned how to both whistle and snap her fingers. She was born in Quezon City, Philippines and came to the United States when she was two years old. Her current plans are to major in business at San Francisco State University and also to plant pumpkins in her garden. Because of her love for cooking, she also plans to own a chain of coffee shops and name it “The Sugar Cube.” Theatre is Katherine’s most recent passion. Her favorite class is Stage Combat, a theatre class in which she learns basic fencing and choreography. She also has a role in her school’s upcoming production, “Little Shop Of Horrors.” If Katherine could devote the rest of her life to one thing, it would be to make sure everyone has water to drink.

Julia Black Ling
$1,000 Scholarship Recipient

"As I enter a new phase of my life at Princeton University, I hope to explore my interests in the biomedical sciences and in astronomy, as well as discover new passions. Last summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to work in a pathology laboratory at Stanford, which instilled in me a fascination with scientific research. Through tennis, I have developed a strong sense of determination; I hope to apply this energy while at college and beyond, as I pursue a career in research."

Rebecca Chan
$1,000 Scholarship Recipient

"My name is Rebecca Chan and I'm a senior at Skyline High School. Next year I plan to attend Brown University and major in Biology. My extra curricular activities include clay sculpture, community service, swim team, and piano."

Jennifer Ham
$1,000 Scholarship Recipient

"I have spent four wonderful years at Oakland High School. This is where I have accomplished my goals of challenging myself with advanced courses, building confidence, becoming a leader, and serving my community and school. Through this process of improving myself I have furthered my knowledge, created friendships, and I am more eager to take on challenges. I plan to attend UC Berkeley to study in the business and medical field. I am interested in becoming a doctor and I hope to pursue this goal by attending graduate school. With my determination and the Asian Employees Association at the Port of Oakland Scholarship, I know that I will be able to succeed."

Rachael Harmon
$1,000 Scholarship Recipient

"Throughout high school, I've always been a girl who stood out. While I never was a very outgoing person, I am someone who knows what I like and what I believe in, and I will pursue these goals to the best of my abilities. I've acted on stage, traveled to Japan, and redesigned bedrooms all in search of what I want to do once I graduate high school. I'm very excited to have been admitted to UC Berkeley's fall architecture program, not only because I've always wanted to go to Berkeley, but because I know it is a great architecture school. If people ask me why I want to be an architect, I tell them it is because I would be able to use my creativity and display what I make to all those around me. I am very thankful that the Port of Oakland's Asian Employees Association has given me this chance to pursue my educational opportunities and passions."
